5 facts to unlock the Lockinge

May 16th, 2015

This year’s renewal brings together runners which have already locked horns with those on seasonal debut to form an intriguing contest.

Using our horse racing software, every day we analyse each race to find profitable pointers for our subscribers and in this post we use our unique data to highlight 5 facts for the Lockinge Stakes.

Age

Since 1997, winners have been aged 4 (twelve), 5 (four), 6 (one), with 4yo’s performing 21% above normal and slightly profitable.

Starting Price Rank

In total the first three in the betting have won 15 races. The favourite has won this race on 9 occasions and has yielded a profit £6.49, a 38.17% return on investment to a £1 stake.

Starting Price Rank in Previous Race

Market opinion in the race prior to the Lockinge Stakes has proven to be a good indicator with those ranked in the first three in the betting last time out winning 14 of the last 17 renewals.

Although favourites have won 6 races, their collective performance is approx. 20% below normal.

Second and third favourites perform better than expected (51% and 47% respectively) and both are profitable.

Recent Course

The venue a horse raced at prior to the Lockinge is of importance with those who ran at Ascot last time out winning 7 races from the last 17 renewals.

Other racecourses of note are Newmarket (4), Goodwood (3), Sandown (2) and York (1)

Race Classification Last Time Out

The chart above summarises the race classification that each horse competed in prior to the Lockinge.

The last columns in the chart lists worse or better than expected performance based on the Actual vs. Expected (A/E) index for each classification.

So for example horses than in a ‘Handicap’ in their previous race, perform better than expected. However there only 5 runners under this category and therefore the sample size is not a large enough to draw conclusions.

From the chart we can see that 33 horses ran in a Group 1 race last time out of which 12 horses went on to win the Lockinge.

If we contrast this result against horses that previously raced in a Group 2 event, although there were more horses of this type (46) only 3 have won and statistically below expectation.

Using our horse racing statistics we can conclude that to win the Lockinge, horses that have demonstrated their ability to compete in a Group 1 event have a distinct advantage.

Horses in this year’s renewal who raced in a Group 1 race last time out are:

Toormore, Integral and Night Of Thunder
