2000 Guineas: 5 facts for the classic opener at Newmarket
May 2nd, 2015The 2000 Guineas is one of the five turf classics in the United Kingdom and in the eyes of some punters heralds the flat racing season beginning in earnest.
Proform provides the best horse racing software in the industry and using our unique tools, we analysed the result of every 2000 Guineas from 1997 to uncover five facts that were common to the majority of winners during this period. .
Irish Trainer Supremacy
In total, horses trained by A P O'Brien, D K Weld, John M Oxx and J S Bolger have won 9 of the 18 renewals with the performance of A P O'Brien 32% above expectation (6 winners)
Raised in the Emerald Isle
Since 1997 there have been 116 Irish bred runners. Of this population 10 horses have won which is a performance 54% above expectation.
When compared against the 115 horses in the same period that were bred in Great Britain, only 6 of these horses won, a performance which is slightly below normal.
No Silver Medals
This is not a race for those that didn’t hit frame to prove their classic credentials prior to the race. Of the 18 renewals, 13 horses won last time out (two) came second and (two) came third.
Primed and Ready
From our analysis of the statistics, 164 horses had no prep run in the month prior to the 2000 Guineas.
From this population 14 horses won, a record 25% above what you would expect which suggests that previous winners were primed and ready specially for this race.
The Wisdom of Crowds
From professional punters to novices, if you believe in efficient markets, all opinions and sentiments are factored into the prices on offer for each horse.
When we analysed the record of horses based on their position in the market in their race prior to the 2000 Guineas, 16 of the last 18 renewals have been won by horses that were priced in the first two in the betting last time out.
