Three Punting Pointers for the Bet365 Gold Cup
April 25th, 2015The last of the big betting races of the National Hunt season, the bet365 Gold Cup Chase is the feature of today’s race card at Sandown and in this post we use our horse race software to uncover three race pointers you can use to help you narrow the field.
Crumbs from the betting market
10/1, 14/1, 9/1, 11/1 and 20/1 winners in recent years at face value suggests a competitive race and you would be correct in that assumption!
However, using Proform to analyse the results of this race, of the 18 renewals since 1997, our study determined that during this time period, the winner emerged from the first 12 in the betting market.
When we looked at the performance of horses by starting price rank last time out, horses that were in the first 7 of the betting in their previous race performed approx. 20% better than expected.
Using Proform, our subscribers can easily determine the qualifiers for these stats and other systems from with the system builder.
Be wary of the favourite
As part of the many features in our Race Guides, we include information on how favourites and second favourite perform in the same race type.
Using our race guides, if we review the performance of the market leader, the favourites strike rate is 7%, a performance 60% below normal.
Using the Chi column highlighted in red above, 4.23 indicates that there is a small chance that the stat is not due to a freak set of results and the record of the favourite is poor.
And when re look at the horse race statistics for the market leader in the bet365 Gold Cup down the years, the favourite has only won once in 18 renewals, a performance 74% below expectation.
Now Murphy’s Law could make mockery of our analysis, but if you fancy the race favourite, we suggest you ensure it satisfies every element of your personal selection criteria.
